Development of Metal-Oxide Based Hybrid Nanocrystals

Research:

Within the European project NANOTAIL [in collaboration with the National Nanotechnology Laboratory (NNL-CNR) in Lecce (Italy) and the Centre d’Elaboration de Matériaux et d’Etudes Structurales (CEMES-CNRS) in Toulouse (France)], my work involves to design and characterize novel “hybrid” nanocrystals displaying and/or combining different properties (electrical, optical, magnetic…) in the same motif. The project wishes first to develop reliable synthetic procedures using “wet chemistry” techniques in order to well-control the shape, the size and the composition of the nano-objects. To obtain either lattice-matched or lattice-mismatched heterostructures, a typical strategy we explore, uses defined seed morphology nanoparticles of a selected material to control nucleation and growth of a secondary structure (e.g.: Tin metal and an oxide material such as MnO, ZnO or magnetite). Such nanoscale materials - combining either two metals, two oxides or one metal and one oxide - can exhibit novel capabilities arising from the combination of properties as well as from their interfacial interactions. Aiming to fine tune their applicability, characterization (structural and physical) of the nanocrystals in parallel to theoretical investigations allows an in depth understanding of the correlated electronic processes taking place in their low-dimensional nanostructures. Such original nanomaterials can impact many technological fields, including biological labelling or magneto-optical recording.
