Collective Electronic/Magnetic Phenomena in Functional Materials
Research:
The laboratory undertakes the study of correlated electrons in functional inorganic materials. Nanotechnology and its application-pathways to magnetism, electronics and photonics are sought as an alternative for discovering or understanding novel quantum mechanical coupling mechanisms. Fundamental understanding of the control of these systems is a prerequisite for realising their potential advantages in diverse applications, occasionally dictated by mutually exclusive collective electronic phenomena [e.g. ferro-electricity and (ferro)/(antiferro)- magnetism in magnetoelectric multiferroics].
Materials’ syntheses entail low-temperature precipitation and sol-gel or high-temperature solid-state, as well as elaborate colloidal chemistry methods that afford condensed phases, straddling from complex transition-metal oxidic (c.f. bulk solids to hybrid nanocrystals) to molecule based systems.
Key experimental tools, involve, X-ray and neutron scattering, muon-spin relaxation (muSR), magnetization, conductivity, thermal analysis. Such probes integrate external “stimuli”, including laser light, magnetic field or high-pressure, while are essential parts of in-house diagnostic tools. The latter are developed by our group to unravel dynamical and static aspects of spin-lattice coupling. In this effort large-scale neutron, synchrotron and muon facilities [Switzerland (PSI), UK (RAL), France (ESRF) and USA (NIST)] help us to complement the picture of relationships amongst structures-reactivities-properties of solids at the atomic scale.
Personal:
I enjoy swimming, fishing and hosting barbeque parties.
