Subject area:

Theoretical & Computational Physics of Hybrid Nanocrystals

Research:

Currently, I am involved in the NANOTAIL project which is concerned with the synthesis and investigation of the physical properties of hybrid nanocrystals (NCs) and is financed by the European Commission. The understanding of NCs enables their controlled formation at industrial level (mass production) and opens up new ways of possible applications in numerous fields, e.g. biomedicine, optoelectronics, robotics and computer industry. My work involves the theoretical investigation of these nanostructures, particularly at DFT level. At the moment I am focusing on the following issues:

  1. 1. Magnetic oxide and noble metal nanocomposites with different structures, e.g. core/shell type. The goal is to understand their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. Electrical transport investigations are also planned, partly by using tunneling spectroscopy simulations.
  2. 2. Effect of surfactants on the formation (size and shape), electronic and magnetic properties of NCs, particularly the understanding of the effect of the electronic structure modulation at the interfacial regions.

To achieve our goals a strong interplay between theory and experiment is foreseen.
