Nanoparticle-Assembled Solids for Clean Energy Applications:
Synthesis, Structure and PropertiesResearch:
Our group is working with tailored nanoparticles, in the size range of 10 nm to 20 nm, which belong to a special type of nanoparticles (hybrid nanocrystals) as they comprise a core (inner material) and a shell (outer layer material), which leads to a synergistic effect of the different properties of the adjacent chemical phases.
The synthesis of such nanocrystals is a complex process and hence there is a wide range of techniques available for producing them. On the other hand there is a constantly growing demand for clean energy materials, a term which implies the applications, as well as the production methods of these materials. Thus, we synthesize in our laboratory transition metal oxide nanoparticles with complex magnetic properties via wet – chemical techniques. This is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach, as we can work at lower temperatures than in other processing techniques and we are also able to control the product size and shape and its chemical composition, by modifying the synthesis process.
My aim is to optimize their processing and to produce nanoparticle-assembled extended structures, with tunable properties that can yield materials for technological applications. The latter may include sensors or memories that may operate, for example, without the need of DC sources or other related thermal losses. The produced nanoparticles are characterized by an armoury of complementary methods, including, Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.
Personal:
I enjoy running outside while listening to music. I find travelling exciting and as an amateur photographer, I like to take scenery pictures of the places I visit.
