Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

“Development of high-resolution neutron time-of-flight magnetic diffraction on WISH”

The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (IESL-FORTH, Heraklion, Crete, Greece) and the ISIS neutron and muon facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Oxfordshire, UK)  jointly invite applications for a Post-Doctorate Research Fellow in the area of physical and materials crystallography.  The project is to develop analysis techniques and the scientific portfolio for a high-resolution neutron time-of-flight magnetic diffractometer (WISH), which is currently being constructed on the new ISIS Target Station II, and is due to become operational in early 2008.  The position is funded by an EU FP6 Infrastructure Grant (Contract No. 011723 - RICN), of which IESL-FORTH is a partner, for up to three years.

The Research Fellow will further develop existing methodologies to analyse high-resolution cold-neutron time-of-flight diffraction data on polycrystalline samples, and develop new methods for analysis of powder and single-crystal data from extended position-sensitive detectors, which will be available on WISH.  He/she will also contribute to the development and commissioning of the instrument and software.

In addition, the Research Fellow will join existing research programmes in the fields of transition-metal magnetism, the ordering of charges and orbitals and coupled degrees of freedom, particularly on geometrically frustrated lattices, and will have the opportunity to synthesise and characterise materials at facilities in ISIS and IESL-FORTH.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in physics or chemistry, and a strong drive towards producing original research.  A background in computational methods and some experience of scattering techniques is desirable.
The position is based primarily at the ISIS facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Oxfordshire, UK), but with extended periods of up to 3 months at the IESL-FORTH (Heraklion, Crete, Greece).  Diffraction experiments will be performed at the ISIS facility on existing instruments such as GEM, OSIRIS and SXD but access to other facilities (ESRF, ILL) is likely during the course of the project.

Salary scale €35,000 to €42,000 p.a., dependent on experience. The post is available from 1st January 2006. The call is “open” till a suitable candidate is found.
